This Sunday, June 3rd, Enjoy The High Museum of Art & Much More For Free!

On Sunday, June 3, 2012, The Woodruff Arts Center and its divisions – the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences – will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the tragedy at Orly Airport, which was the catalyst for the founding of The Woodruff. Eagles, Hawks and Owls—OH MY! It's a day made for the birds. But not just any birds, meat eating birds with sharp beaks and talons. Sunday, June 3 - FREE Community Day at The Woodruff

Activities include: Free admission to the High Museum of Art; storytelling, puppets, art projects & music by Young Audiences; An instrument "petting zoo" by the ASO Performances and acting workshops by the Alliance Theatre, including a reading by Pearl Cleage. Q&A session with Alfred Uhry, author of Driving Miss Daisy. June 3, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the plane crash at Paris' Orly Airport that took the lives of 122 Atlanta arts patrons. This tragedy deeply affected the city and ultimately inspired the founding of The Woodruff Arts Center. Community Day at The Woodruff will commemorate the anniversary and celebrate the impact the Arts Center has had over the last 50 years.

Tuesday, June 5 - View "Transit of Venus" on Top of Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain Park (SMP) hosts a telescope viewing of the transit of Venus with the Atlanta Astronomy Club on top of Stone Mountain. There will be 10 large solar-filtered telescopes set up.  The transit of Venus occurs when the planet Venus passes directly between the Earth and sun. The transit is the last one to occur in this generation’s lifetime with the next transit predicted for the year 2117.

NEW EXHIBIT! The Big Adventure gives children the opportunity to test their abilities, both mentally and physically! Children will explore Adventure Mountain and The Tunnels of Fun, where they  will climb a six-foot wall of rocks, crawl through dark tunnels and, finally, reach the Crow’s Nest for a bird’s eye  view of the other adventures throughout the exhibit. Children can fly through the air on the Virtual Flyer, a kid-size airplane that requires team work - and much more!

You’re invited to Fernbank’s newest special exhibition The Scoop on Poop. It’s the #1 exhibit about #2! Fish do it, frogs do it, pythons, eagles, and elephants do it, yet poop is one of those subjects we find difficult to talk about with a straight face. Listen in on a bear's digestive system, learn the language of poop in countries around the world, examine fecal samples in a veterinarian's lab, compete in dung beetle races, track wild animals by clues left in scat, see how long it takes an elephant to poop their body weight, and meet a dinosaur dung detective in this fascinating exhibition that reveals what we can learn about animals by examining what they leave behind.

Oh come on, you loved the movie too right? How much fun is this...The surprise hit of the 2007-08 Broadway season roller skates its way into Actor's Express in a frothy explosion of camp, comedy and disco! Thursday, June 14 - ASO/ASYO Side-By-Side Concert w/ Justin Blalock

Student musicians from the Atlanta area, including members of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO), will perform a side-by-side concert with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians. Youth Orchestra Music Director Jere Flint will lead the combined orchestras in a program featuring Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony and Mozart’s Overture to “The Magic Flute.” The concert will be hosted by Atlanta Falcons #63 Offensive Guard (and musician) Justin Blalock, who will lead the combined orchestras in John Williams’s popular “Raiders March” from the Indiana Jones films to end the concert.

Macaroni Recipe: Stoplight Popsicles


One of the best things about summer is all the fresh, seasonal produce! These homemade popsicles are full of sweet summer fruit and lots of great vitamins too. The combination of kiwis, peaches, and strawberries provides plenty of Vitamin A, C, and D, plus potassium, folate, and fiber!

Stoplight Popsicles
  • 2 cups strawberries, washed and hulled
  • 2 cups sliced peaches
  • 6 medium kiwi, peeled and chopped
  • honey to taste, if desired
