ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER SUMMER CAMPS
Location: 130 West Paces Ferry Road
Atlanta History Center summer campers explore the past and the world around them through enriching and engaging activities. Join the fun with games, stories, crafts, and outdoor expeditions, as well as interactive exhibitions. Each weekly session has a new theme, so campers enjoy a variety of hands-on, immersive camp experiences all summer long.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMPS
Dig In!
June 3-7 / Ages 6-11
Roll up your sleeves and learn how to fill your belly with groceries you grow yourself. Become an urban farmer and soak in soil preparation, build a worm bed, find out what to plant when and where, recognize good bugs and bad bugs, and even learn how to preserve and prepare all the goodies you grow.
Survivor: 1860
June 10-14 / Ages 6-11
No running water? No electricity? No problem! Spend a week on our working farm and learn everyday survival skills of the 1860s, such as building a fire, distilling water, identifying poisonous plants, constructing a shelter, and weaving cloth.
My Town
June 17-21 / Ages 6-11
Atlanta’s first official resident moved in 180 years ago this summer. A lot has changed since then. Immerse yourself in our city’s rich history and find out what makes Atlanta a cool place to live. Amaze your friends and impress your parents with the fun facts and fascinating people you discover.
Hail to the Chief

Explore the lives and legacies of 44 of America’s most famous people – the American Presidents. Discover the feats and foibles of our Commanders-in-Chief, learn all 44 presidents in order through songs and games, and run your own campaign for Camp President.
Beyond Gettysburg
July 8-12 / Ages 6-11
The year 1863 was pivotal in the Civil War and was marked by much more than important battles and famous speeches. Come along as we go beyond Gettysburg to explore bread riots and draft riots, emancipation and the formation of African American troops, the controversy over total warfare, and more.
Weird History

Join us for one of our most popular camps and explore the weird and wacky side of history. The weirdness never ends with this summer’s all new and even weirder week full of secret societies, crazy occurrences, wild prophecies, and bizarre inventions.
The Cold War (Code Name: Spy Camp)

The Cold War produced some of history’s most famous – and infamous – spies, double agents, and acts of espionage. Learn the causes of the Cold War, the major players, and, of course, lots of super-cool spy tactics.
Creatures Great and Small

Humans and animals have worked together for thousands of years, but how was it that man and beast first joined forces? Explore the many ways animals improve our lives, as well as the many faces of man’s best friends. Campers learn about animal husbandry first hand while helping tend animals on the Smith Family Farm.

Adventures in History

Ages 4-5
Your curious little one will love discovering history in a camp designed just for them. Campers spend the day exploring subjects they love such as farms, trains, houses, and animals through fun games, stories, and crafts. In the afternoons, campers have time to rest and play under the caring supervision of our educators.

MARGARET MITCHELL HOUSE CAMPS
Location: 990 Peachtree Street
Writing camps provide an opportunity for youth to discover the power and excitement of writing while honing their skills in a fun, interactive environment. With 10-15 participants per camp, each young author receives individual attention while learning how to create meaningful prose through a variety of techniques, like stream-of-consciousness writing, journaling, free verse poetry, and other forms.
Mystery in the City: I Spy
June 3-7
Become a secret agent and hunt down an enemy spy ring to foil their evil plot. Agents crack codes to discover the location of daily field trips where they collect clues and gain inspiration to pen stories of espionage and intrigue.

Explore the many different fields of journalism as you explore the many sights and sounds our exciting city has to offer. Take on the role of an investigative reporter, photojournalist, sports writer, and more as you visit museums, theaters, parks, and other cultural destinations.

Whether you are writing for fun or writing for school, you will benefit from learning the basics of doing research, building compelling characters and interesting plots, and writing a good story with good grammar. Through word and writing games, journaling, and an off-site observational field trip, learn the essentials that lead to a “writing life.”
Developing Character: Heroes and Villains

Discover how to construct a picture of a complete person through description, plot, and dialogue by developing your own characters and the stories they anchor. Learn how character development enhances a story and moves the plot forward while taking your characters through heroic adventures or villainous schemes.
Mystery in the City: Haunts and Habitats

Unravel the mysteries of Atlanta’s historic places and haunted spaces. Use the stories and environments you encounter during daily field trips to help you delve into character, setting, plot, and dialogue as you craft your own mysterious story.

The Power of the Pen: Persuasive Writing
July 29-August 2
Learn the ins and outs, and the ethos, logos, and pathos, of convincing an audience of your point of view, as well as the best ways to support your argument. During the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s most famous writings and speeches, take a field trip to the King Center and be inspired by one of history’s most eloquent persuasive writers.

GENERAL SUMMER CAMP INFORMATION
Camp Hours:
• AHC Camps: Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM; extended day care options also available.
• AHC Camps: Each week concludes with a special Friday afternoon event featuring a display of campers’ projects.
• AHC campers who are not participating in extended childcare may be dropped off at the Atlanta History Center after 8:45 AM and picked up between 3:45 and 4:00 PM.
• MMH Camps: Monday through Friday 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM
• MMH Camps: Each session wraps with a Writers Showcase for family and friends on the last day of camp. Mark your calendars!
• MMH campers may be dropped off at the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown after 9:15 AM and must be picked up by 5:00 PM.
Extended Childcare
• AHC: Morning session: 8:00 – 9:00 AM and/or afternoon session: 4:00 – 5:00 PM daily (There is a $25 additional charge per session.)
Please note that children cannot be dropped off before 8:00 AM and must be picked up promptly by 5:00 PM. Regrettably, due to staffing considerations, we must impose a late charge of $1 per minute due at pick-up if a child is not picked up on time.
FEES
• AHC Campers: $225 per week for Atlanta History Center members at the Family Membership level/$275 per week for nonmembers.
• MMH Campers: $325 per week for Atlanta History Center members at the Family Membership level/$375 per week for nonmembers.
LUNCH
• AHC campers may purchase lunch for the entire week from Chick-Fil-A at our campus’s Coca-Cola Café at the cost of $36.25 per camper. Alternately, children must bring bag lunches each day. In addition, two snacks will be provided daily.
• MMH campers must bring bag lunches each day. In addition, light snacks will be provided.
Cancellation Policy
No refunds can be made for cancellations less than two weeks prior to the start of the selected camp. Any cancellation or change made more than two weeks before your child’s first day of camp carries an administrative fee of $25. If you withdraw your child before this two week deadline, you will receive a refund less the $25 fee.
