Fun Activities to Help Your Child Learn at Home

By Sponsored by Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies® November 26, 2014
Early learning is crucial for developmental and educational success. While a preschool environment is one of the best places for a child to learn, there are also many beneficial learning activities that can be done at home. During the first 5 years of a child’s life their brain is forming new connections that will last a lifetime. Children learn in so many ways and fun, intentional activities can have a huge impact on their development. From enjoying the adventures of outdoors, to playing with board games indoors, here are a few ideas on how you can use fun activities to help your child learn at home:

Board games with problem solving activities
Look for board games that involve problem solving. Help your child think through each problem. Brain development is further enhanced when you participate and engage your child in age-appropriate problem solving games.

Learning Activities Online
It’s easy to find interesting games and learning activities online. Exposing your child to online learning will help prepare him for learning later in school when technological knowledge will be required. Online activities help expose children to technology early, while avoiding overexposure. As a precaution, we recommend a 30 to 45 minute time limit for children to enjoy online games and activities.

Dinner Time Fun
Ask your children to look at their dinner plate and think of other items that are the same color as their food, and does the food remind them of anything else. This activity really gets the conversations going at mealtime.

Friday Fun Night
Have a fun evening at home with the entire family. Try to choose a night when you are certain everyone will be home. Allow your children to choose an activity for the night. Whatever they choose, engage them with conversation and questions. Ask them “why” questions and look for opportunities to have them think and organize their thoughts. If they watch a movie, occasionally pause the movie and ask questions about the motives and the plot. Every activity, which engages your child’s brain, is a great learning tool for a young and developing mind.
