GuruNanda Pulling Oil - For Better Oral Hygiene

What's Oil Pulling All About?

By Michelle Sisco April 23, 2015
Over the last few months I've been trying to find some remedies for several different autoimmune conditions that I've been struggling with. One of them is severe dry mouth - possibly due to Sjogren's Disease (although that diagnosis is still up in the air).

I use a LOT of Biotene products for dry mouth, and pretty much always have a cup of water in hand.

So when I was heard about oil pulling I was intrigued. But it took me a while to understand what oil pulling even was - the name doesn't really fit the description of the process. "Oil swishing" would make more sense!

Oil pulling is a practice that is supposed to improve oral hygiene - and some say it improves overall health as well.  The idea is that by "swishing" oils in your mouth, you will "pull" bacteria and harmful toxins out of the body.

I use some Young Living products, and oil pulling was recommended to me by another Young Living user.  My personal combination is a spoonful of organic, unrefined and unpressed coconut oil, a few drops of Young Living Peppermint Oil (good for digestion and of course fresh breath!) and also Young Living Thieves Oil (a blend of cloves, rosemary and other oils that is supposed to help with immune function). I swish the combination around in my mouth for about 20 minutes - and then spit it out (in the trash - not in your sink).

Dry mouth can also lead to more rapid development of periodontal disease, so it's important to find remedies that work. I get immediate relief when I'm oil pulling...and it generally lasts for a good while. Sometimes I get lazy though - having to get the coconut oil out, my essential oils, make the mix, etc. Plus it's not very "travel" friendly.

So, just last month a received an email regarding GuruNanda Pulling Oil. I was asked if I was familiar with oil pulling. And I said, yes, in fact I am! But, I'd never heard of the GuruNanda ready-made product, and I was happy to try a sample.

GuruNanda Pulling Oil is packaged and ready for you to swish - ingredients include sesame oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, peppermint oil - it's all natural and made with organic ingredients. Pulling oils are based on 5,000 Ayurvedic science to help "pull" bacteria and harmful toxins out of the body.

Uses (per the GuruNanda website): Proper digestion and weight loss •Healthier teeth and gums, plus better breath •Moisturizes dry mouth •Thicker, more lustrous hair •Clear, radiant skin •Mood, concentration and focus improvement •Dosha balance (okay, that I'm not familiar with).

You can purchase GuruNanda Pulling Oil in an 8.45 fl oz bottle for use at home. But what I loved the most was that they also sell it in .5 oz tubs - perfect for travel, or to put right in your purse- CLICK HERE

GuruNanda suggests the following: Gently swish oil, pushing it between teeth for 2-3 minutes. For better results, gradually increase to 15 minutes. Spit oil out. DO NOT SWALLOW. Rinse mouth thoroughly with water, and brush teeth and tongue.

So what do I think of the product?  For first time oil pullers, or for anyone who does not have severe dry mouth, I would absolutely recommend it. It's a simple way to give oil pulling a try, and at a reasonable price too.

For me - I absolutely love it for convenience. If I'm in the middle of something but am really suffering from dry mouth, I'll go take a tablespoon and start swishing! And if I'm out and about, I keep one or two of travel size tubs in my purse just in case.

My homemade version is a little stronger - and I personally think that it's more helpful for me for my own condition, but I still use the GuruNanda oil. I imagine for most people, there's no reason you wouldn't get what you need from this product alone.

So - now you can go read up on oil pulling! I've heard about people adding activated charcoal for teeth whitening ( I've never tried this nor do I know if it actually works). Regardless, you can do your own research and see if this is something for you.

I'm all for trying new things to improve the way I feel - and oil pulling helps me. If you're concerned about your dental health and want to try something new - give it a try.  You never know!

Disclosure: I was sent complimentary samples of GuruNanda Pulling Oil for the purpose of this review. Opinions, however, are my own.
