See "Annie" at the Fox Theatre - Tomorrow (or Tonight!)

By Shannon Moore March 18, 2017

"Leapin' Lizards!" ANNIE is back! My 10-year old daughter and I went to see the show on Friday night, and it was outstanding. My daughter absolutely loved the Fox Theatre, the show, the music...everything. She's only seen "Annie, Jr" as performed by her elementary school peers, as well as the recent movie, so she was really excited to see ANNIE on the big stage, and it absolutely went far beyond her wildest expectations.

The scenery and the loveable orphans drew us in from the very beginning, and we were amazed at the talent of Tori Bates as Annie. Her voice impressed us from the first song, "Maybe," and continued to hold us spellbound through "It's the Hard Knock Life" and my daughter's favorite, "Tomorrow," until the very end and "A New Deal for Christmas."

My favorite character has always been the not-so-loveable Miss Hannigan, and at this performance she did not disappoint! All of the actors portrayed our favorite classic characters with loving perfection, including my daughter's favorite character, Sandy the dog. As soon as "he" came on stage, she gasped, and said "it's a real dog!". When asked her favorite part, she said the end, it was when Sandy was reunited with Annie.

PARENT NOTE: There is mild swearing (the "D" and "H" words, only) throughout the show, which took me by surprise. There is also a scene depicting a group of homeless people from a shanty town, representing the political feelings of many people at the time, the depression-era - it went right over my daughter's head, and I had to explain a bit of history to her after the show.

Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin for the 19th time, this production of ANNIE is a brand new incarnation of the iconic Tony Award®-winning original. The original production of ANNIE opened April 21,1977 at the Alvin Theatre and went on to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album and seven Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Best Book (Thomas Meehan) and Best Score (Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin). The show remains one of the biggest Broadway musical hits ever. It ran for 2,377 performances after it first opened, and has been performed in 28 languages and has been running somewhere around the world for 39 years!
