GIVEAWAY: Win a Gift Card to Chuy's - Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Tex-Mex Fun (and Yum) for the Whole Family

By Michelle Sisco, Publisher - Smyrna Vinings Marietta and Buckhead Midtown Brookhaven Macaroni Kid May 4, 2017

Recently, my family was invited to Chuy's Aker Mill to experience their newest restaurant, which just opened at the end of February. We'd never been to a Chuy's before, and I didn't know anything about it - other than that the food was Tex-Mex.

Founded in Austin, Chuy's has restaurants all over the U.S., including locations in Kennesaw and Dunwoody. Still, it was new to me, and I walked in completely unsure of what to expect.  I was quite surprised by the colorful, eclectic decor and lively atmosphere - especially the giant palm trees!

Aside from the decor, what makes Chuy's the most special is their commitment to serving fresh food. Everything is fresh and made on site daily (minus only chicken nuggets and ice cream!). The freezer at the restaurant is about the size of one you might have at home, so they have no choice but to use fresh ingredients. Even the drinks (like the yummy pomegranate margarita I tried) are made with hand-squeezed limes.

We love our tortillas, so this was my favorite part - at Chuy's, they are all hand-rolled in front of your eyes. The dough is made from scratch every morning, and they are all SO good - flour, corn and blue corn tortillas, hot and fresh from the oven!

Chuys is also know for their signature sauces which are made from scratch daily. There are ten, and we enjoyed sampling all of them! From mild (Tomatillo, Creamy Tomatillo) to extra spicy (Hatch Green Chili) try them all and pick your favorite. You can ask your server for a full sampling! Click HERE for a "sauce tour" online.

We enjoyed a LOT of food during our visit - but here are some of the highlights:

AWESOME APPETIZERS

Queso Compuesto: Chile con queso with seasoned ground sirloin, guacamole and pico de gallo - I could eat nothing else and still be very happy.

Guacamole: trust me...this is some REALLY good guacamole.

FAVORITE ENTREE ITEM

Stacked Enchiladas: An authentic New Mexican recipe. Homemade blue corn tortillas stacked with freshly-roasted, hand-pulled chicken, cheese & Tomatillo sauce, topped with sour cream.  Note: You can choose side items, and the green chili rice was definitely one of the best things on the menu!

KIDS MENU

Mini Crispy Tacos: Three crispy tacos with beef & cheese Served with rice and beans. (Kids meal items are around $5 and include a drink.)

DESSERT

The Tres Leche Cake was amazing. I mean ridiculously amazing. Look at these faces! Topped with creme fraiche and strawberries, I might have to go back JUST for dessert.

Chuy's Akers Mill has only been open a couple of months. The restaurant was pretty busy when we were there, and they were still going through some growing pains with regards to the kitchen (speed and accuracy of the orders). I'm sure that will get straightened out. This isn't a place you go for a super quick meal anyway. Enjoy the atmosphere...and all those sauces!
