Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ MAMMA MIA!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, is back at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre as a part of its final farewell tour. Having never seen the show, nor even the movie adaptation, I jumped at the opportunity to go, and I'm so glad I did. From the moment the lights went down and the rock music started, I was drawn in. The casting was amazing; the actors' voices were simply outstanding, and the passion they brought to their roles was palpable. There was drama, humor (adult humor, and some swearing, so be cautious when considering bringing children), love, loss, and love found again. It was a non-stop rocking musical ride all the way to the spandex-clad sing-along encore at the very end. My friend, who wasn't a big fan of Broadway musicals before this show, afterward claimed that she's now a convert. The Atlanta engagement is running from June 13-18 as a Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta 2016/2017 season special.
MAMMA MIA! is one of the most successful musicals of all time, the eighth longest running show in Broadway history and one of only five musicals to have run for more than ten years on Broadway.
