The Blue Man Group is "Making Waves" at Children's Museum of Atlanta

A Multi-Sensory Exploration of Sound

By Jenna Dennisur, Asst. Editor - Buckhead Midtown Brookhaven & Smyrna Vinings Marietta Macaroni Kid June 23, 2017

My first encounter with Blue Man Group was nearly 10 years ago, before I had kids. See ing the show was a one of my favorite date nights while living in Boston. I loved that it was a whimsical, artistic, and full sensory show -  and I will never forget all the toilet paper falling from the ceiling.  Needless to say, I was very excited to hear that a Blue Man Group exhibit was making its way to The Children’s Museum of Atlanta. I couldn’t wait for my kids to experience it too!

The Blue Man Group - Making Waves exhibit is now open at Children’s Museum of Atlanta through September 4, 2017. It is a national touring exhibit supported by Harman/Becker Automotive Systems and created by the Boston Children’s Museum and Blue Man Group and powered by JBL®. The 1,500 square foot exhibit is designed to bring together science and art through the multi-sensory exploration of sound, so that children can play together while discovering the fun of music. It teaches kids how the elements of science, art, color and sound come together to create music and learning. Children have the opportunity to see, feel and create sound. At the PVC Station in the exhibit, my children played the unique Blue Man Group instruments, while learning how sound works. Similarly, they enjoyed the illustration of sound while watching the short musical piece by Blue Man Group at the JBL®-equipped Surround Sound Theater section of the exhibit. Finally, my daughters loved moving on the stage. They played the PVC pipe musical instruments alongside a blown-up picture of the Blue Man group. They also enjoyed crawling through the moving LED display platforms and tunnels.

The Children’s Museum of Atlanta does a good job of incorporating the same theme of music and movement throughout the other areas of the museum. For example, they performed a quick 10 minute mini-play centered around animal and alien sounds and then at the end of the play the characters escorted the kids over to the Blue Man group exhibit to explore sound a movement further. Also, the Arts Studio room allows kids to experience sound while making maracas and the in the Build It Lab room, children can experience sound while making drums. My girls enjoyed making both.

The Blue Man Group: Making Waves exhibit fits perfectly with the already fun environment at the Museum. I had to beg my kids to leave. They had so much fun painting on the wall, playing in the sand tables, fishing in the pond, and managing the ball machine. Their favorite activity at the museum is the grocery store and diner play area. They love how everything looks so real and they love role-playing. When you go check out the new Blue Man Group - Making Waves exhibit, be sure to stop upstairs at the new science area. There is some great learning upstairs about magnets, planets, robotics, tornados, etc. The Science Bar also has hands-on demonstrations.
