Congregation Ner Tamid Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Of Making Our Community a Home

By Congregation Ner Tamid August 11, 2021

Congregation Ner Tamid, a Reform synagogue in northwest Cobb County, is excited to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of its founding. Under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Joseph Prass, this small, tight-knit congregation in the shadow of Kennesaw Mountain brings Jewish congregants from across Cobb, Bartow, Douglas, Paulding, and Cherokee Counties together for religious services, education, social groups, holiday celebrations, and community service activities.

Back in the Spring of 2006, four individuals met at a Marietta coffee shop to discuss the idea of starting a formal Jewish community—the first—in West Cobb. The name Ner Tamid, Hebrew for eternal light, was selected, recognizing the significance of this synagogue being a beacon for Judaism in this part of Cobb County. The congregation officially incorporated in June 2006, and shared space with a preschool and later a Lutheran church before making its own home off Old US 41 in 2014. Since that time, Congregation Ner Tamid has introduced a B’nai Mitzvah and Confirmation program and affiliated with the National Union for Reform Judaism, as well as with the Institute for Southern Jewish Life. Today, Congregation Ner Tamid boasts close to 50 member families with more than 125 children and adults taking an active part in congregational life.

To celebrate this milestone anniversary, the synagogue plans a yearlong series of 15 signature events. These include social, cooking, and arts activities for youth, men, and women; special Chanukah, Passover, and High Holidays celebrations; a Scout Shabbat; a Tu B’Shevat outdoor conservation project; a community lecture; and a special 15th Anniversary Dinner and Auction.

“For 15 years, we have been working to create Jewish community in West Cobb County,” says Julie Segal of Smyrna, the congregation’s president and one of its longstanding members. “As we celebrate our anniversary, we are focusing on bringing our congregation’s membership closer together and making our congregation an even more vital part of the community. We invite unaffiliated Jews in the northwest suburbs to join us as we create a spiritual home away from home.”

Congregation Ner Tamid is a small Reform Jewish congregation located in the heart of West Cobb in the shadow of Kennesaw Mountain. Founded in 2006, our congregants include young families, older couples, Jews in traditional Jewish marriages, and Jews from interfaith relationships. We value diversity and enjoy sharing our love of Torah, Israel, and God to those interested in taking part.
