After seeing the film, the boy is worried that there’s a zombie hiding under his bed, but his mommy assures him that the scariest thing there is a pair of his smelly shoes. The boy also faces bad dreams, closet monsters and other imagined goblins; each encounter is explored and explained by an understanding grown up, and ultimately the boy learns what is and isn’t real. The book asks kids questions about what scares them and prompts them to draw pictures of frightening things.
“I want kids to enjoy the horror genre without being scared,” said Rob, who explained that he decided to write the book because he thought other horror books for kids were too frightening. “When I would read other horror books to kids, they would get scared by the pictures and content. My goal was to have a cartoon-y look with a positive message that would appeal to the right age group.”
